The Thai Ministry of Transport has announced plans to support six airport projects across Thailand, aiming to bolster the nation’s role as a key transportation hub for the Asia-Pacific region. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri shared the update following the 59th Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Conference, held from October 14-18 in the Philippines. The conference brought together aviation officials from 47 countries to address future growth in air transportation, with projections indicating passenger numbers could double in the next 20 years.
Ms. Manaporn emphasized the need for substantial infrastructure investment in the Asia-Pacific area, particularly to support anticipated increases in passenger demand. The DGCA conference also introduced the “Net Zero Roadmap: Decarbonise Your Airport” project, encouraging airports worldwide to achieve zero emissions while promoting transportation equality. Reflecting this vision, Thailand’s Airport Department plans to enhance existing airport facilities and support new airports in Mukdahan, Bueng Kan, Satun, Phayao, Kalasin, and Phatthalung provinces.
The Transport Ministry has called for airport designs that prioritize user safety, accessibility, and sustainability. Ms. Manaporn noted that each project would adopt a universal design approach, ensuring easy access for disabled travelers. New airports will also target zero-carbon certification with Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), committing to ecologically sustainable practices.
According to Danai Ruangsorn, Director of the Airport Department, the Mukdahan, Bueng Kan, and Satun projects are currently undergoing design and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). Phayao has received budget approval for its EIA next year, while the Kalasin and Phatthalung airports are in the feasibility study stage. These projects are expected to support regional transport equality, contributing to a more inclusive employment landscape that values diverse cultural and social backgrounds under the principles of sustainability and adaptability.
