In a move aimed at reviving the tourism and bolstering the economy, the Thai government has given the green light for extended opening hours at pubs and bars in Bangkok, Chonburi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Samui on New Year’s night. The decision, endorsed during a Cabinet meeting, is part of a broader initiative to stimulate economic activities continuously.
The Cabinet has approved the principles of an urgent ministerial regulation, allowing service establishments in hotel locations to extend their operating hours until 6 a.m., aligning with the hotel law. Specifically targeted at service locations in key areas such as Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Koh Samui in Surat Thani Province, this initiative aims to generate income for the country while providing a much-needed boost to businesses and local communities.
These designated areas will serve as pilot locations, permitting service establishments to stay open until 4:00 a.m. the next day. For other localities interested in extending their service hours, they can do so by adhering to provincial announcements and complying with criteria and conditions set by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
The exceptional extension of service hours will come into effect on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2023, and continue until 6:00 a.m. on January 1, 2024. This decision not only marks a celebratory occasion but also serves as a strategic move to attract revelers and tourists during the festive period.
Mr. Boonanant Pattanasin, President of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, expressed enthusiasm for the extended hours on New Year’s Eve. He emphasized the importance of safety planning to manage the influx of celebrants. Acknowledging the celebratory atmosphere, he urged individuals to consume responsibly and be mindful of their actions to avoid accidents. Boonanant Pattanasin highlighted the potential consequences of irresponsible behavior, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration.
As the government aims to strike a balance between boosting economic activities and ensuring public safety, the extended nightlife hours represent a strategic measure to capitalize on the festive season while maintaining a responsible approach to entertainment.
