Bangkok Launches Monthly Bus and Red Line Passes

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has teamed up with the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) and Krung Thai Bank to launch a monthly pass that includes unlimited rides on the city’s public bus network as well as 50 journeys on Bangkok’s Red Line electric commuter train services.

The “Transit Pass Red Line BKK x BMTA” intends to lower commuting costs while encouraging more people to utilize the Red Line and the city’s public buses.

According to Suthep Punthupeng, CEO of SRT Electrified Train Company Ltd, the Red Line, which links Taling Chan in Bangkok to Rangsit in Pathum Thani province, is utilized by around 25,000 passengers everyday. Just 5,000 of them, however, use multi-trip cards. The majority of commuters buy a single-trip token for their travel.

Commuters must first obtain a fare card from an SRT or BMTA ticket counter for 100 baht. They may then purchase the monthly transportation pass for 2,000 baht after registering the card, which is good for 30 days from activation. Commuters must wait for the subscription period to finish before obtaining a new Transit Pass once the 50 train journeys have been used up.

Commuters who use the Transit Pass will spend around 22 baht per voyage, which is less than the average price per journey for a single-trip token, which is approximately 25 baht.

According to BMTA Deputy Director Phimphaw Wongsuthirat, the monthly pass is projected to raise the number of electronic pass users to 60,000, which is approximately 8.5% of the 700,000 passengers served daily by the BMTA.
