AOT to Begin Construction Project Near Suvarnabhumi Airport

After a declaration in the Royal Gazette approving the use of farmland around the facility for infrastructure and buildings, Airports of Thailand (AOT) will go forward with its ambitions to establish a “airport city” near to Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

The project will begin with the opening of bidding for a contractor to build a bridge and road from the airport to the 723-rai site, as well as install basic infrastructure like as piped water and electrical cables, according to AOT. The airport city project will thereafter be developed by a private enterprise into a trading hub for agricultural products, a quality control center for exports, and a distribution facility for export items.

The airport city project intends to boost Suvarnabhumi Airport’s potential, and AOT anticipates that it will increase non-flight revenue from 43% to 50%.

AOT intends to commence the project, beginning with infrastructure building, after the recent change of the zoning ordinance in Samut Prakan province, where Suvarnabhumi airport is located. The organization anticipates that it will take about a year to establish the infrastructure before evaluating applications from private enterprises to create the airport city.

Moreover, AOT is presently seeking permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand to assume ownership of the airports in Udon Thani, Buri Ram, and Krabi. AOT has previously said that it intends to improve Udon Thani and Buri Ram airports into aviation hubs with direct flights to and from Laos and Cambodia, while Krabi airport would be expanded to become another international airport in the southern area.
